FAQs

How are words counted?

Words are counted by splitting text on whitespace boundaries. Hyphenated words like "well-known" count as one word. Numbers and abbreviations each count as one word.

How does the tool count CJK (Chinese/Japanese/Korean) characters?

CJK characters do not use spaces between words, so each character is treated as one unit. The character count is typically more meaningful than word count for CJK text.

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time is estimated at 200 words per minute (average adult reading speed). The formula is: reading time = word count / 200, rounded up to the nearest minute.

What is the Flesch-Kincaid readability score?

The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level estimates the US school grade needed to understand the text. It uses average sentence length and syllable count. A score of 8 means an eighth-grader can understand the text.

Does the word count include numbers and punctuation?

Numbers count as words (e.g. "42" is one word). Punctuation attached to words does not add to the count. Standalone punctuation is not counted as a word.
